One of the most common questions I get before a session is: “What should my child wear for their school photo". Well, good news! It’s simpler than you think. With just a few thoughtful choices, you can ensure your child’s personality shines through beautifully in their school portraits.

Not exactly sure what is a Fine Art School Portrait and what makes it different than traditional school photos? Check out this blog post that explains the key differences.

Let Their Personality Shine

You will read some great tips below, but above all else, let them be themselves. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s authenticity. Choose something your child feels comfortable and confident in. When they feel like themselves, it shows in every image.

Keep It Simple: Solid Colors Are Best

Solid colors photograph beautifully and help keep the focus exactly where it should be—on your child. Soft neutrals, rich earth tones, or classic colors like cream, navy, olive, blush, and gray all work wonderfully.

When in doubt, simplicity always wins.

Avoid Distractions

While some patterns can be fun in everyday life, they don’t always translate well on camera. Try to avoid:

  • Large logos or graphics

  • Busy or bold patterns

  • Neon or overly bright colors

These elements can pull attention away from your child’s face, which is the heart of the portrait.

Focus on the Top Half

Because these sessions are photographed from the chest up, the most important part of your child’s outfit is what’s on top. Soo -

  • Necklines (simple tees, soft sweaters, classic collars)

  • Texture (knits, linen, soft cotton)

  • Layers (light jackets or cardigans can add dimension)

A well-chosen top can elevate the entire look without needing a full outfit overhaul.

Final Tip: Try It On First

Have your child try on their outfit ahead of time to make sure it fits well and feels good. Avoid anything itchy, too tight, or distracting—they’ll be much happier (and more relaxed) during the session.

Your child’s portrait is about capturing who they are right now—their expressions, their spirit, their story. Thoughtful wardrobe choices simply help create a clean, timeless frame for that magic.

I can’t wait to photograph your child for their fine art school portrait.
